Between 1726 and 1728, as a result of the decision by Benedict XIII, the congregation of the “Pazzarelli” left the hospital in Piazza Colonna and moved to Via della Lungara, in the premises of the Hospital of S. Spirito in Sassia.
In “Raccolta delle più belle vedute antiche, e moderne” designed and engraved by Giuseppe Vasi, the engraving in Picture 15 shows the unfinished arch by San Gallo leading into Via dei Penitenzieri. On the left we see the street going up to the church of S. Onofrio, in the background the Church of the S. Spirito in Sassia Hospital and, to the left, on the bastions of Urban VIII, the Barberini pavilion built in the mid-17th century by Taddeo and Carlo Barberini, based on the design by Giovan Battista Contini. The construction of the pavilion, forming part of the villa, was made possible by the purchase of a vineyard from the S. Spirito Hospital. To the right we can see the retaining wall of the old S. Spirito cemetery, and a little house belonging to the Hospital, purchased to expand the lunatic asylum.
