In the publication, commemorating the start-up of the works, the authors provide a brief history of the hospital and illustrate the executive design.
The numerous central and peripheral buildings are laid out according to logistical requirements, according the needs of the service and the patients. The latter are housed in two wards: one for women and children, and the other for men. Various pavilions are designed for each ward. As we read in the report, the “peaceful” category is the largest one, with 180 places planned, of which 90 for men and 90 for women. The pavilion for “peaceful” children in the women’s ward has two floors and is designed to house a total of 50 individuals, boys and girls; the ground floor has large rooms for school and work, and a wing has the dormitories for the older children. The younger boys and girls have separate dormitories on the first floor and go there only at night. “Di giorno questi bambini sono tutti riuniti nei locali del piano terreno, al quale è annessa una grande area sistemata a giardino, e recinta di rete metallica, per la ricreazione ed i giuochi all'aria libera, riuscendo così a realizzare un vero trattamento medico-pedagogico.”
